Awareness, Support and Prevention

In 1999, a coalition of private and public agencies involved in the criminal justice system came together under a grant from the Office of Justice Programs to develop a regional "best practices" approach to the management of cases involving sexual violence. Since then, this coalition, referred to as the San Diego Sex Offender Management Council (SOMC), has developed and implemented standards to improve the quality and effectiveness of sex offender evaluations, treatment and supervision. teenager photo With community protection and prevention of future sexual violence at the core of SOMC's mission, members dedicated over 1000 hours to the development of a community education curriculum and a community notification protocol that was adoped by all San Diego law enforcement agencies. The approaches below have become model "best practice" tools for sex offender management.
